This ring is made from a 1888 US Morgan dollar. The coin is 90% silver and is a size 13.25. This ring can be sized up or down, up to one full size. The band width is 10.1mm. This is a hefty ring! This ring has an aged patina finish.
The Morgan silver dollar, so called because it was designed by
U.S. Mint engraver George T. Morgan, was minted from 1878 through 1904 and then
again briefly in 1921 until it was replaced by the Peace dollar. There is an M
for Morgan at the base of the neck next to the last tress of hair. There is
also an M on the reverse of the coin in the left-hand loop of the ribbon. George
T. Morgan was born in the U.K. and learned his craft at the Royal Mint in
London. Morgan dollars are 90% silver and 10% copper.
Production of silver dollars was suspended in 1904 due to
low demand and depleted bullion reserves. In 1918 over 270 million silver
dollars were melted and in 1921 the production of silver dollars resumed. The
Morgan design was used until the Peace dollar design was adopted later that
year.
