The Liberty Walking half dollar was designed by Adolph
Weinman, a German born American sculptor. His work was primarily sculptural and
architectural although he is best known in the numismatic world for designing
the “Walking Liberty” half dollar, the Mercury dime and various armed services
medals. His monogram, AW, can be found under the tips of the wing feathers on
the reverse.
His sculptural work can be found on the Wisconsin, Missouri
and Louisiana state capitol buildings, the Jefferson Memorial and the interior
of the U.S. Supreme Court among many others.
Liberty Walking half dollars were minted from 1916 through
1947 and are 90% silver, 10% copper.
